A contact form needs somewhere to send its data: a server endpoint, spam protection, an email delivery service. A mailto: link needs nothing: your own email app does the work. For an infrastructure-proving milestone, the simplest thing that works wins. A proper form can be added later, and would be a good exercise in server actions.
